Not that I think there was a chance of fire from atomized fuel, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a fuel dumping situation affecting people on the ground like this before.

Seems like a weird choice. The aviation experts I’ve seen quoted say that in the rare case this sort of dump happens, it’s usually done over water and/or above 10,000 feet to minimize risk to people on the ground.

Missed it yesterday. Based on the map of the flight path, and the proximity to the coast you’d think they would’ve circled over the water to dump before heading inbound.

Kerosene won’t fully atomize under the conditions presented, but it’s not as if it was splashing on the ground. Curious to know why they didn’t fly higher and over the water for this.

You’d think. It sounds like they initially thought they didn’t need to (not sure why they’d think that, landing with a tank fueled for a trans-Pacific flight seems like a bad idea), and then changed their mind but still wanted to get on the ground ASAP.

There will be an investigation into this. The pilot initially told the air traffic controller that a fuel dump was not necessary. Then shortly before landing they are dumping fuel.

Anytime an emergency is declared there’s an investigation. Does’t necessarily mean the crew’s ass is in a sling, but the FAA/NTSB will want to know why they dumped fuel over a populated area at the altitude they were at.
